Goossen Clerkx

P0001 Lineage

Goossen Clerkx is the earliest known ancestor of this family: he lived around 1600 in Elshout or the immediate surroundings, then under the manor of Oud-Heusden. Whom he married has not come down to us. With him begins the lineage that runs through many generations to the present-day Klerks family.

Notes

Living around 1600 in Elshout or the surrounding area; whom he married is uncertain. Research leads (external, still to be verified against primary sources): on the BHIC forum 'clerx – clercx samenkomst van parenteel' and in the genealogy of B. Meijs he is identified as Goossen Janszoon Clercx (the patronymic suggesting a father named Jan Clerx), possibly married to Godertke Goderts, and a citizen (poorter) of Heusden in 1583 — in which case born around 1555-1565, so older than assumed here. His son Lambert Goossens Clercx (P0002) follows from him. His branch is thought to be related to that of Claes Jansen Clerx (possibly brothers, both sons of a Jan Clerx); that Claes branch is worked out on clericus.eu (via Aert Claesen Clerx → Joannes 'Arnoldi Nicolai' Clerx, born in Elshout, baptised 1657 in Drunen). The name Clerx/de Clerc already appears in this area in 1407 and 1433. Primary finding (still to be verified): the magistrates’ registers of the town of Heusden (SLAH, access 0322) record, in 1586-1591, a Goossen (Gooswijn) Adriaenss Clercx, married to Godertken Goderts, with a burnt-down plot in the Smidtstraat at Heusden and land at Elshout; he died in 1586, leaving an orphan child. The wife Godertken Goderts matches the external lead above, but the patronymic (Adriaenss, not Janszoon) and the early death suggest this is probably an older generation than assumed here. A 1599 deed further shows that the widow Godertken Goderts came from Wijck (daughter of a Godert), had a sister Grietgen and was still alive at that time. See the attached document with the deeds.
