Josef Heinrich Franz Persoon was born on 22 April 1903 in Eicken, a district of Mönchengladbach (Germany), the eldest son of Pieter Persoon and Anna Giesen. When the family fell apart in 1913, he was ten years old. Together with his brother Henk he was long regarded in the family as 'missing'; his cousin Leo Klerks searched for both brothers for years in vain. In reality Josef built a life of his own in Amsterdam: he became a carriage painter, the same painter's trade as his brother Henk, and married there on 3 July 1929 to Emma Rosalie Bison, a young woman from Bottrop in Germany. That life did not last long: he died as early as 24 March 1933 in Amsterdam, not yet thirty. So the second 'missing' brother, too, turned out to have gone his own way, however short it was.

Notes
Marked as 'missing' in the 1913 guardianship file and in Leo Klerks' research (letters 1986/1988); never traced by the family. His marriage certificate (Amsterdam, 3 July 1929) and an external family tree (MyHeritage) reveal his later life: carriage painter, living in Amsterdam, married to Emma Rosalie Bison from Bottrop, and died on 24 March 1933 in Amsterdam, not yet thirty. The marriage certificate gives Eicken (Monchengladbach) as place of birth; family sheet 9 (S2) gave the nearby Neuwerk. The death certificate (Amsterdam, no. 1844, drawn up 27 March 1933) confirms this: he died on 24 March 1933 in Amsterdam, aged twenty-nine, a carriage painter and husband of Emma Rosalie Bison, with Eicken in Germany given as his place of birth. A The Hague family card (Haags Gemeentearchief, access 0354-01, inv. 1351) later records the household in The Hague and names, besides Josef and Emma, a third person, ‹privé›, almost certainly their daughter. The card scan is still restricted; year of birth and any other children still to be verified once the scan is released. At this marriage both parents, Pieter Persoon and Anna Giesen, then living in Amsterdam, were personally present and gave their consent; the certificate expressly notes them as 'present before me', unlike the bride's mother, who consented in writing (by deed).
