Pieter Leonardus Jacobus Persoon was born on 9 February 1878 in Haarlem.

Early years

At eighteen, in February 1896, he was convicted by the District Court of Haarlem and fined twenty guilders for cruelty to a horse on the public road near Heemstede. Around 1897 and 1898 he served as a hussar (cavalryman) with the 1st Hussar Regiment in Amersfoort.

Family and poverty

He married Anna Maria Giesen, who came from Dülken (Germany); their children were born partly in Germany and partly in the Netherlands. He earned his living as a stoker on a steam trawler. In 1912-1913 the family lived in Spaarndam, in poverty and with severe neglect of the children.

According to his Amsterdam municipal card he was registered in Amsterdam on 20 October 1914, coming from Spaarndam; later addresses were Lange Leidsche Dwarsstraat 92 (1916), Frans Halsstraat 55-III (from 12 November 1934) and Hartenstraat 29-II (from 25 February 1950, his last address). Buried at De Nieuwe Noorder cemetery in Amsterdam. In 1929 he was, as a labourer in Amsterdam, personally present at and consented to the marriage of his son Josef (marriage certificate Amsterdam, 3 July 1929). In June 1943, shortly after Anna's death, as a widower and general labourer he applied for a foreign passport; the passport photo from that application is the portrait shown of him here.
